Optimising the airside upgrade project to minimise operational disruption.
Siem Reap
In Siem Reap, the project started in 2016 and was completed in early 2018. It involved the rehabilitation of existing airside facilities including:
Strengthening the existing runway
Widening the shoulder up to 7.5m
Creating a blast pad as well as a RESA (Runway End Safety Area) at both thresholds of the runway
Adding two new taxiway entrances including Code E box culvert
Grading and levelling the runway strip
Creating a service road alongside the runway
Upgrading the threshold 05 approach lighting system to comply with CATI approach requirements
Upgrading the threshold 23 simplified approach lighting system
Updating the whole airfield lighting with LED technology
Renew all airfield lighting system power supply with new CCR and new cables.
For the design, Egis services consisted of:
Performing the preliminary infrastructure design of runway and existing taxiways: asphalt overlay design (including shoulder widening, blast pad, RESA), new taxiways creation and strip levelling.
Performing the preliminary and the detailed designs for the AGL systems, including an audit of the existing airfield lighting and equipment (lights, control system, signs, power supply, isolation, and photometric control).
For work supervision our responsibilities to Cambodia Airports/SCA included:
Setting up safety procedures before the beginning of the works.
Maintaining daily safety conditions (night works) following runway reopening.
Assisting SCA Technical Project Management with daily works supervision (night works).
Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville
In Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, projects started in 2017 and 2018 respectively, and were completed in 2018 and 2020.
We provided project management, design and works supervision services for the runway overlay project in Phnom Penh and for the runway overlay and 800m extension in Sihanoukville, including:
Preliminary infrastructure and detailed designs; drawing and technical assistance.
Airfield lighting audit, detailed design review and technical assistance.
In Sihanoukville, works also included an 800m runway extension to accommodate code E aircraft types such as Airbus A350 and Boeing B777, full airfield lighting retrofit to LED technology, a new airfield lighting power room, localizer relocation due to runway extension and updates to both approach lighting systems 03 and 21.
In parallel with the runway extension project, we were selected to provide project management consultancy for the design and construction of a new 40,000m² terminal along with a new apron and new airport access on the city side. We appointed a resident Project Manager for the different runway projects and a resident team with particular expertise in building and pavement engineering for the new passenger terminal building project in Sihanoukville.
