Egis, in partnership with Arcadis, has been selected by DP World to act as the Owner’s Engineer for the development of the future Contrecœur container terminal at the Port of Montreal. A landmark project for Canadian trade, this new infrastructure will support the growth of international commerce while increasing the annual capacity of one of the most strategic gateways on Canada’s East Coast by 60%.
As part of this mandate, the joint venture will oversee the design and engineering of the landside infrastructure essential to the terminal’s operations. The teams will work on buildings, container handling areas, rail facilities, utility networks, and truck gate control infrastructure.
Egis will be specifically responsible for the design of utility buildings, civil infrastructure networks, crane rails, pavements, and facilities associated with truck inspection and control gates. Arcadis will lead the environmental, geotechnical, electrical, and railway engineering scopes, as well as the design of the terminal’s main administrative and operational buildings.
Beyond its significance for the Port of Montreal, the project will play a key role in strengthening Canada’s supply chain resilience. According to the Canadian government, the construction phase is expected to support approximately 4,000 jobs annually. Once operational, the terminal is projected to generate nearly CAD 750 million in annual economic benefits while improving the efficiency and reliability of supply chains across the country.
The project is backed by a CAD 1.16 billion federal investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank. It builds on the ongoing collaboration between Egis, Arcadis, the Montreal Port Authority, and DP World on projects aimed at developing high-performance, sustainable port infrastructure tailored to the evolving demands of global trade. Construction of the Contrecœur terminal is expected to be completed by 2030.
